Prerequisites: Elementary geometry, intermediate algebra, and trigonometry; or precalculus. Passing score on the department's Calculus Readiness Test required prior to enrollment. In addition, students must meet the ELM requirement.

Catalog Description: Functions, graphs, limits, continuity, derivatives, and applications, with extensive review of algebra and elementary functions.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

• Define, manipulate, compute, and graph any polynomial, rational, trigonometric, power, exponential, or logarithmic function
• Use fuctions to represent changing quantities
• Compute limits of algebraic expressions
• Appreciate the connection between the limit and the asymptotic behavior of a function
• Define the derivative as the limit of a difference quotient and appreciate its physical significance
• Compute the derivative of any function referred to in the first bullet above, and any combination of such functions
• Identify the ways in which a function can fail to have a derivative
• Apply the derivative to solve a variety of problems

Grading policy: Your grade for the course will be based on your performance on exams, quizzes, and homework (more information on these below). The number of points awarded for these is as follows.

Class attendance is strongly encouraged. In addition to new material, important course information will be given in class, and sometimes quizzes will be administered.

Expectations for Zoom meetings: In short, my expections for Zoom class meetings are the same as for regular classes on campus. Connect in advance to avoid being late. The class will start on time. Please turn your camera on, but feel free to use a virtual background as long as it is not too distracting. No recording or taking pictures/screenshots are allowed during class. Mute yourself when you are not talking. Find as quiet spot as pssible and do your best to avoid distractions. Request that your family members do not disturb you during class time. Stay on task the whole time, until the end of the class. Please put away any phones and other distracting gadgets. No texting, etc. during class. Take notes (dedicate a notebook or binder to this class). However, questions addressed to the instructor are welcome at any time during class. I will frequently ask if there are any questions, but if needed, you may ask for a clarification at other times as well.

Quizzes will sometimes be given during class. Quizzes will not be announced in advance. They will be short and quick (5-10 minutes) and will test your knowledge and computational skills. We will often discuss the quizzes right away, so no late quizzes are given. However, two lowest scores are dropped, so if you miss one or two of them, your zeros will be dropped. The quizzes are based on your homework. To do well on quizzes, do your homework diligently, check your answers, and ask questions whenever you miss something.

Homework will be assigned for each section. It is not collected or graded, however, as mentioned above, the quizzes are based on your homework, so it is very important to do it.

Exams: There will be three tests (50 minutes long each) and one final comprehensive exam (2 hours long). If for any reason you can not take a test at the scheduled time, please let your instructor know as soon as possible, and certainly before the test. See schedule for exam dates.

There will be one extra credit opportunity at the end of the semester. To be eligible for extra credit, you must have your camera turned on every class.

Extra Help: It is essential not to fall behind, because each class may use the material studied previously. If you have trouble with some material, seek help in the following ways:

• Ask your instructor, either in class or privately. Don't be shy to ask questions. If you don't understand something, chances are very high that somebody else doesn't understand that either. So your classmates will be thankful to you for aksing questions in class! My contact info is given on the course web page.
• Work with your classmates. Note: working on your homework together is allowed and encouraged, however, every student should learn how to solve all homework problems on their own.
